We have partnered with RIWAQ to support heritage conservation as resistance. RIWAQ has documented 50,000+ structures and rehabilitated 50 villages in Palestine, preserving identity, strengthening memory, and creating livable spaces.
Heritage Conservation as a tool for resistance.
In conflicts or situations of occupation, culturecide often accompanies acts of genocide or ethnic cleansing, aiming to erase a group’s history and identity.
Cultural heritage preservation initiatives (like RIWAQ’s efforts in Palestine) often counter culturecide by protecting and revitalizing endangered cultural elements. From 1994 to 2003, Riwaq surveyed 420 villages across Palestine and documented 50,320 heritage structures. RIWAQ focused on rehabilitating and conserving 50 villages across Palestine.
Why Conservation Matters
Riwaq goes beyond restoring historic buildings: it reimagines spaces under occupation, preserving cultural heritage as a pillar of Palestinian identity. Through their work, heritage becomes a tool for:
-
Tackling urgent socio-economic and political challenges
-
Strengthening collective memory and identity
-
Creating safe, livable spaces for communities
-
Producing and sharing new knowledge
